Vacation

Yes, I'm still alive.

We flew to Cairns back on Sunday and was blown away by the roaring heat. The hostel we are currently staying in is for girls only, and it's incredibly clean. The owner, Dawn is also very nice and she's booked all our tours for us. Yesterday, we went on a lovely boat cruise to The Great Barrier Reef. The boat was really nice, the staff was incredibly friendly, and the reef was amazing. Christa and I couldn't afford to go scuba diving but we thoroughly enjoyed snorkelling (floating on top of the water with our face submerged wearing a mask and a breathing tube). The buffet lunch served on board was great. I had fish, shimp, sausage and salad. It was sunny for a while but quickly got cloudy. The brilliant colours of the reef are magnified in the sunshine, so we really could've used some at our second snorkel location. I was the only person on the boat who saw a sea turtle, and I'm very proud. They had a scuba diver handing everyone a seacucumber of some sort for a special underwater photo shot. The print cost an arm and a leg but it was well worth it.

Today, we went on a tour of the Tablelands (special natural land formation), walked through the rainforest, and seen some amazing waterfalls. It rained all through the day, but a rainforest looks more magnificent in the rain...but the weather certainly didn't help the photos. I managed to left Christa's 35mm camera setting on the table at the organic dairy farm, and we couldn't go back for it due to the tight tour schedule I was on. I'm officially hopeless. And guess what? Apparently I only lose specific items. Cameras in particular. I still have the mini nailfile Vikki gave me on July 11 before the Eric Whitacre concert at the Opera House. *shakes head* I just don't get it.

But the good news is that Nathan, our cute Aussie tour guide offered to pick it up for me during the next tour and mail it to the next hostel of our travel. I feel so bad causing such troubles!

Christa also caught a kangaroo slip and fall today, it was pretty funny.

Oh oh and, we went out with our Scottish Country Dance group last Friday and we had Roo and Emu pizza. Honestly, Australia is the only country that would proudly serve both its national animals.

Let's go, let's go, let's go to the beach!

Well, I officially have nothing to do today. Can't complain, I guess. As I'm sitting in front of Christa's laptop typing, I dug out my cd containing all the wallpapers and the website I've been making. It really made me miss my computer at home. By some reason I have this really strong urge to finally finish what I started, but I know I won't get too far, given that I've started many times, and never managed to finish.
It will take a good couple of days for me to complete a website.
I'm going off to tan for a couple of hours now.
5 hrs later
Back!
Well, since my exams were finished this past Sat morning, Christa and I then spent the rest of Sat at the Sculpture by the Sea outdoor art exhibit by Bondi Beach. Just as we were about to hop the bus, the sky attempted to spoil our plans as huge rain clouds blocked off the warm sunshine and even let down a rain drop or two. This instantly made Christa very grumpy, but as the clouds drifted away, her mood improved as well. The exhibit starts from Tamarama beach, which lies midway between Coogee and Bondi Beach. From uni, we couldn't hop the bus that would take us directly to Tamarama, so we got on the Coogee bus instead. As the bus took us closer and closer to our destination, my excitement grew. Okay, so I've been to Coogee beach before and actually swam in the waters, but going to the beach is always exciting. How can anyone grow tired of it? We arrived at about 1pm, and since we wanted to actually spend sometime enjoying Bondi, our schedule was pretty tight. From Coogee to Bondi is a good 2 hr walk; and looking at sculptures along the way definitely lengthens the trip. Christa wanted to hop a bus to Tamarama so we don't have to waste time walking, but we didn't know where to take the right bus. One of the locals from an ice cream stand told us it was only a half hr walk max from Coogee to Tamarama, so off we went. As it turned out, the walk was more than an hour long, but the places along the way were so picturesque that we couldn't really complain. One of the most noteworthy spot along the way was Waverly cemetery. The size is not the only impressive part; the view from the graves is simply breathtaking and the scenic walk route goes directly loops around it. As Christa mentioned, out of all the places to be buried in, can't beat the gorgeous ocean view at Waverly. The increasing number of people along our walk told us that we were close to the exhibition, and as we turned around the corner, white sand speckled with people and blue waters came into view. Yep, Tamarama Beach.
Being an artist, I coughed up $8 to get a program guide to the exhibition. It was well worth it, because none of the works had the artist's name or the name of the piece. Only a small plastic sign with a number sits in front. And that number refers correlates to the program guide. I personally find that annoying; how are people supposed to appreciate the pieces to its fullest if basic information is missing?
All of the sculptures were very well done. Christa especially liked "leda and the seagull" by Ingrid Morley. There was also an elephant made of old tvs and stereos called "broken family". A big bottle completely covered in thongs, a pair of giant sunglasses, bunch of big metal crabs scattered about the rocks, a bright red Styrofoam dinosaur in a cage, a bunch of suitcases scattered about the rocks, and a solar powered spider robot that makes cool noises.
Ah, Bondi Beach. Finally, we can cool off. The remarkably fine white sand felt warm under my toes. The water was a bit cold, and it's saltiness is still surprising to me. Yes, I swallowed a few mouthful when unexpected waves crashed over. There was a strong current drifting us to the left, so Christa and I were constantly moving to the right in order to stay at the same spot in the water. A good workout. I discovered that a bikini is not good to swim in. And I didn't like the fact that there were tourists with cameras on the beach looking at us as we got out of the water racing to our warm, dry towels.
We then got off the beach to sunbake the wetness away on the grass. On the way, Christa passed by a cafe and wanted to check out their ice cream prices. Of course, there were no numbers advertised outside the place so we had to go inside and stare at the small printing on regular sheets of paper sitting on the counter. Considering that I was dripping wet in a bikini, bare foot, my running shoes & socks in one hand and a giant backpack on my back, I must look really odd. Actually, my looks probably screams "tourist". No ice cream! I want out!
We spend the rest of the time walking around Bondi to see what else it had to offer. Not much other than oceans of souvenir stalls, bikini shops and cafes. We passed by an Indian place and Christa's ice cream craving instantly morphed. She's now craving food from the North Indian Diner in Newtown. Unfortunately, catching a bus home turned out to be a nightmare. We waited in three different bus stoops and watched six buses go by before we managed to get on one of them. This just made us crave Indian even more. To top it up, traffic was horrible; we were racing the bus after we got off one stop early and walked the rest of the way. Well, the food was definitely worth all our troubles. This particular North Indian Diner was where we had our first meal in Australia, and there we were again one week before we leave. As Christa put it "it's a nice way to round up our trip".

*sigh*

It's over!

I'm referring to my most dreaded exam---ACCOUNTING!

I'm not going to make any prediction of grades. All I'm going to say is this, I'm retaking the course at Guelph when I get back.

Yes, it is that bad.

In other news...

Heidi is now working as a technician in the same engineering consulting firm I worked in as a cleaner. I got her that job, obviously! Yes, she is having great fun testing condoms and getting out of work all hot and sweaty *wink*

I'm Procrastinating

Okay, so I'm really bored sitting in front of the computer copying down notes on different types of recreational drugs. I know, learning about crack, speed, ecstasy, etc should be interesting. But I guess even if you study the most interesting material in Pharmacology all day, tolerance develops and the initial level of interest wears off.

SO I found this interesting website instead.

Amusing news headlines: Man mistakenly cuts off penis, dog eats it

Another interestine one: Man sets house on fire trying to kill mosquito.

And another: Man crashed car "during sex"

And so many more.

If you don't have time, check the site out.
